Holiness

1 Peter 1:15 “but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct”

I have been meditating lately on what does it mean to be holy in “all your conduct”. Have we as a generation gotten so comfortable with Christianity that we have lost sight of what it means to be holy? Are we so complacent, and content with temporal satisfaction that we have no desire for holiness? Over and over again, in my personal life, I continue to choose things for so called ‘entertainment’ as opposed to being content to just spend my extra time enjoying the presence of God, and as Paul puts it “training for godliness” (1 Tim 4:7). This is a command to be holy, not merely a suggestion. Could it be that the lack of funds in the church, the lack of missionaries among the unreached, the lack of compassion and burden for the lost is all rooted in our lack of holiness? This is what I believe the writer of Hebrews eludes to in  chapter 12 “strive… for holiness without which no one will see the Lord.” The truth of it is that we have become so entangled with the idea of church, mixed with trying to live a ‘modern’ life that we have tried to bring the carnal things of life into our walk with God, and it has stripped us of our holiness. Please do not misunderstand the next statement; I believe Jesus is a personal Savior, Friend and God, however our intimacy with God should not lead us to dismiss a life of holiness. So my challenge to you is to pray and seek God, and see what holiness looks like in your personal context and walk with Christ. 2 Corinthians 7:1 “Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God.”
